Treasurer Lynn Rogers Congratulates

TOPEKA – The State of Kansas Treasurer’s Office extends congratulations to the winners of the College Savings Month essay contest. Students from grades 5 to 12 were asked to answer the questions, "What does the Kansas State Treasurer do?" and "If you had $1 million dollars, what would you do with it?" Students were grouped by grade levels 5-6; 7-8; 9-10; 11-12. One student from each grade level grouping per congressional district was selected for a total of 16 selected winners.

A panel of teachers from each congressional district were selected to review the essay entries with a rubric that scored the essays based on topic, organization, grammar/punctuation, and creativity.

The Kansas State Treasurer's Office is pleased to announce that the following young writers were selected from each congressional district:

Mariella, Hays Middle School

Scott, Bucklin Middle School

Annie, Ell-Saline Middle School

Kaycee, St. Mary’s High School

One of the Treasurer’s favorite answers to "What does the State Treasurer do?" comes from Forrester, a 5th grader, who said, "I think the State Treasurer is like a pirate because he has all the money from the state taxes. He sorts it and counts it and ships to the president. I think he collects all of it and says, “Arghhh Kansas”."
